Leadership Position Descriptions

AAEM’s chapter divisions and sections rely on dedicated member leaders to guide local initiatives, support advocacy efforts, and strengthen our emergency medicine community. The following positions outline the key roles, responsibilities, and membership eligibility for those interested in serving.

Chapter Divisions

President

The president identifies local issues related to emergency medicine, sets the chapter division’s priorities and projects, develops engaging member benefits, and leads the chapter division’s board meetings via Zoom or in person at AAEM’s Annual Scientific Assembly.

Membership Eligibility: Full Voting Member of the Chapter Division

Vice-President

The vice-president helps manage the chapter division, supports key projects, attends all recurring meetings (via Zoom or at AAEM’s Annual Scientific Assembly), and assumes the president’s duties when needed. This role is ideal for members considering a future run for chapter division president.

Membership Eligibility: Full Voting Member of the Chapter Division

Secretary-Treasurer

The secretary-treasurer supports the chapter division’s operational board by tracking project progress, overseeing funds and financial matters (with support from AAEM staff), and collaborating with executive leadership on issues affecting emergency medicine. This position requires attending recurring board meetings via Zoom or at AAEM’s Annual Scientific Assembly and offers valuable experience in chapter division leadership.

Membership Eligibility: Full Voting Member of the Chapter Division

At-Large Director

The at-large director collaborates with the operational board on emergency medicine and local issues, proposes new ideas and projects, supports chapter division priorities set by the president, and attends recurring board meetings via Zoom or at AAEM’s Annual Scientific Assembly.

Membership Eligibility: Full Voting Member of the Chapter Division

Please Note: DVAAEM, GLAAEM, and USAAEM uniquely define their at-large director positions as specific state or military branch representatives for their respective chapters.

Associate Representative

Focuses on emergency medicine and local issues with particular attention to impacts on Associate members, supports chapter division projects and priorities set by the president, and attends recurring board meetings via Zoom or at AAEM’s Annual Scientific Assembly.

Membership Eligibility: Associate Member of the Chapter Division

Please Note: This position pertains only to the CAL/AAEM Operating Board.

Resident Representative

Advocates for the needs and interests of local chapter division members and collaborates with the operational board on emergency medicine issues. Serves as the primary representative and champion for local residents.

Membership Eligibility: Resident Member of the Chapter Division

Medical Student Representative

Addresses the needs and interests of local medical student members within the chapter division and communicates relevant emergency medicine issues to the operational board. Serves as the primary representative and advocate for local medical students.

Sections

Chair-Elect

Upon completion of their term, the chair-elect assumes the role of section chair. During their tenure as chair-elect, they gain crucial experience leading meetings and managing projects when called upon by the section’s current chair.

As chair, they will serve as the principal executive member of the section council. They will preside over section meetings, guide their council’s annual direction and initiatives, and fulfill any additional duties assigned by AAEM.

Please Note: All CCMS-AAEM officers must have completed a critical care fellowship at the time of application.

Secretary/Finance Chair

The secretary/finance chair provides oversight and reports to the council leadership about the section’s finances and membership statistics (with the support of AAEM staff). They must attend the section meetings, and perform additional duties as assigned by the council.

Membership Eligibility: Full Voting Member of AAEM

Councilor

Councilors participate in section work groups and leadership initiatives as assigned by the section chair. They also share responsibility for planning their section’s annual events or initiatives. Councilors must attend the section meetings and perform additional duties as assigned.

AAEM/RSA Representative

AAEM/RSA representative(s) are responsible for attending meetings, helping organize webinars, networking, and mentorship opportunities to recruit and engage students and residents, providing regular summaries and reports to the AAEM/RSA Board of Directors.

Membership Eligibility: Resident or Medical Student Member of AAEM/RSA

Please Note: The YPS-AAEM and LT-AAEM resident representative positions are nominated by the AAEM/RSA Executive Committee and approved by the section’s executive council.
