Your Residents Will Sign Contracts Soon. Will They Be Ready?
Most emergency medicine residents receive little to no formal training in contracts, compensation, or the business side of practice.
The American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) helps fill that gap at no cost to your program.
The Reality
Within months of graduating, your residents will be making decisions that directly impact their careers. Where they work, how they are paid, and what terms they agree to.
Yet many have never been formally taught how to:
- Evaluate a contract
- Understand compensation structures
- Identify restrictive or unfavorable terms
That is not a reflection of their ability. It is a gap in training.
What AAEM Provides
AAEM offers residency programs a customized, in-person presentation delivered by an experienced emergency physician leader.
Each session is designed to address the specific needs of your program and typically covers topics such as:
- Employment contracts and common pitfalls
- Compensation models in emergency medicine
- Practice environments and staffing structures
- Key considerations when entering the workforce
What Makes This Valuable
- Relevant: Focused on decisions residents will face immediately after graduation
- Practical: Built around real-world considerations, not theory
- Flexible: Content is tailored to your program’s interests
- Accessible: Provided at no cost to your residency program
How It Works & Scheduling
- Submit a request
- AAEM coordinates a speaker based on availability and location
- Presentation content is aligned with your program’s needs
- The session is delivered on-site
Speaker availability is limited each year due to clinical and professional commitments. If you are interested in hosting a session, we recommend requesting a visit early to ensure scheduling flexibility.
