On Friday, the Trump administration issued a regulation that excludes transgender status from the legal definition of sex discrimination in healthcare. This regulation allows institutions and individual professionals who provide healthcare services to legally exclude transgender people from receiving their services. This regulation also eliminates anti-discrimination protections for patients with a history of termination of pregnancy and it reverses the requirement for insurers and institutions that provide healthcare to notify patients when foreign language translations of important documents have been made available.
The American Academy of Emergency Medicine and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine Resident and Student Association oppose this regulation. The Academy stands for equal access to healthcare for all individuals regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, insurance status, place of birth, residency, religion, political belief, or any other human condition.
Research has shown trans-people to be among the most vulnerable and often more in need of healthcare services than the general population. They present later in the course of a given disease and often sicker as compared to the population as a whole. This regulation is not supported by science or medical evidence and has the potential to result in harm to the health of the nation.
This is not an emergency issue, but a national health issue.
