Full Voting and Emeritus members are eligible to run for the Board of Directors. Self-nominations are not just allowed, they’re strongly encouraged.

Leadership Opportunities

President-Elect

The President-Elect plays a defining role in setting AAEM’s vision and ensuring that emergency medicine remains physician-led, ethical, and independent. This position blends strategic leadership with hands-on engagement, preparing you to assume the highest office within the organization.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve a two-year term before assuming the Presidency
  • Participate in board and executive committee meetings to guide policy and strategy
  • Collaborate with the President to appoint committee chairs and members
  • Represent AAEM externally as a spokesperson to partner organizations and media
  • Liaise with committees to ensure alignment across initiatives
  • Provide input on operational and staff matters to support effective governance
  • Engage actively with board communications to remain responsive and informed
Secretary-Treasurer

The Secretary-Treasurer ensures AAEM’s operations, governance, and finances reflect the transparency and integrity our members expect. This role combines organizational oversight with strategic leadership, ensuring the association’s mission is supported by sound management and ethical stewardship.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve a two-year term as part of AAEM’s executive leadership team
  • Participate in board and executive committee meetings and conference calls
  • Co-sign AAEM checks and review financial documents in a timely manner
  • Work with staff to prepare annual budgets and treasurer’s reports
  • Serve as liaison to AAEM committees as requested by the President
  • Regularly review and respond to AAEM communications to stay informed
  • Collaborate with staff to address operational issues and support efficient processes
At-Large Board Member (three positions)

At-Large Board Members are the voice of our community. You’ll represent diverse perspectives, help set strategic priorities, and ensure the organization remains grounded in the realities of emergency practice.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve a three-year term as part of AAEM’s governing body
  • Participate in board meetings and conference calls that drive organizational decisions
  • Engage in active review and discussion of AAEM communications, initiatives, and policy updates
  • Liaise with chapter divisions, committees, sections, and special interest groups (SIGs) to build alignment and momentum
  • Reach out to lapsed members to understand challenges and strengthen retention
  • Collaborate on initiatives that support physician wellness, advocacy, and fair practice
YPS Director

The Young Physician Section (YPS) Director serves as the primary representative and advocate for early-career emergency physicians. This position plays a key role in ensuring that the perspectives, needs, professional development and young physicians are part of the organizations strategic goals, policies and initiatives.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve a two-year term as part of AAEM’s governing body
  • Participate in board meetings and conference calls that drive organizational decisions
  • Provide leadership and strategic guidance to the YPS, including program development, communications and member engagement
  • Serve as liaison to the committees within the Vision & Ventures Council
  • Reach out to lapsed members to understand challenges and strengthen retention
