Dr. Phillip A. Dixon currently holds the position of Associate Professor within the Department of Emergency Medicine at The Ohio State University. He holds the position of Medical Director of Utilization Management as well as Fellowship Director for Administration within the Department of Emergency Medicine. His journey into emergency medicine leadership began during his Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he later excelled as Chief Resident and Co-Chair of the UMMC Chief Residents’ Council. He became interested in advocacy and administration and served as a board member of the Resident and Student Association (RSA) of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, as well as elected the resident representative for the Mississippi State Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Following his residency, Dr. Dixon accepted the role of Administration Fellow at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, which included an EMBA degree from The Ohio State University. This pivotal experience continued his passion for healthcare leadership and management, propelling him towards further administrative pursuits and professional growth. In March of 2019, Dr. Dixon’s dedication to advancing emergency medicine was further recognized when he was elected YPS Director of AAEM, a testament to his leadership within the field. Professionally, Dr. Dixon also was selected as Assistant Medical Director of the University Hospital Emergency Department in 2019, and served in that role until 2023. His involvement with AAEM continued as an At-Large board member from 2021-2024 and now Secretary-Treasurer (2024-present). In this capacity, Dr. Dixon plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of AAEM, advocating for the interests of emergency medicine professionals, and fostering a culture of excellence within the field.

Dr. Dixon’s professional interests encompass a broad spectrum, from optimizing hospital utilization and efficiency to shaping national and state health policies. He is a board certified Physician Advisor and spearheaded the Physician Advising program at The Ohio State University from 2019-2024 before being promoted to Utilization Management Medical Director. He specializes in payer-hospital relations in his new role. On a personal note, Dr. Dixon enjoys gym/fitness activities, sports, outdoor pursuits, and engaging in community events. He is a self-taught golfer with a 15 HCP. Dr. Dixon completed his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University while playing 4 years of football. He then went to St. George’s University for both his MPH and MD degrees.
