AAEM’s Voice in the Fight for Emergency Medicine

Medicine is shifting—fast. Business metrics are driving decisions. Patients are becoming data points. And physicians are being stripped of the autonomy to advocate for those in their care.

This isn’t just a story. It’s the reality we’re working to change.

That’s why the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) stepped forward as an Executive Producer of the feature-length documentary Suck It Up, Buttercup — a film pulling back the curtain on corporate influence in emergency medicine and the risks it poses to both physicians and patients.

About the Film

Suck It Up, Buttercup is a hard-hitting exploration of how the business of medicine has begun to outweigh the practice of medicine — and what that means for the future of patient care.

Through the voices of emergency physicians, legal experts, and patient advocates, the film exposes a system increasingly controlled by corporate entities that prioritize profit over people.

Why AAEM Got Involved

AAEM exists to champion fair practice environments, protect the patient–physician relationship, and ensure that board-certified emergency physicians—not corporations—are the ones making critical care decisions.

Supporting this film was a natural extension of our mission. We wanted the public to see what’s happening behind the scenes — and why it matters to everyone who might one day find themselves in an ER.
