Find the Right AAEM Membership for You

The American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) offers structured membership categories based on your training, board certification status, and career stage — whether you’re newly board-eligible, board-certified, in fellowship, or moving toward retirement.

Select the categories below to see eligibility, benefits, and dues in one view.

Full Voting

Dues: $595/year

All Full Voting members of AAEM are granted the designation of Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (FAAEM). No additional application or requirements are needed beyond board certification.

To qualify, you must be board certified in emergency medicine by ABEM, AOBEM, or RCPSC, or in pediatric emergency medicine by ABEM or ABP.

Associate

Dues: $195/year (within 1 year of residency)
Dues: $295/year (more than 1 year out of residency)

Associate membership is available to physicians who have completed an ACGME or AOA-approved emergency medicine residency program and have not yet achieved board certification.

Fellow-in-Training

Dues: $95/year

Fellow-in-Training membership is available to physicians who have completed an ACGME or AOA-approved emergency medicine residency and are currently enrolled in a fellowship.

International

Dues: $195/year

International member status is available for those physicians with an interest in emergency medicine who practice outside of the United States or Canada.

Emeritus

Dues: $295/year

Emeritus membership is available to long-standing Full Voting members who are retiring or transitioning out of active practice. Members may retain the FAAEM designation as long as they continue to meet eligibility requirements.

To qualify, you must meet one of the following:

  • Practiced emergency medicine for 30+ years and held Full Voting membership for 10+ years, or
  • Be at least 65 years old and held Full Voting membership for 10+ years

Special consideration may be granted in cases of disability or full retirement for members who have held Full Voting status for at least five consecutive years. Requests are reviewed individually by the AAEM Membership Committee.

Emeritus status ends if the member returns to active clinical practice or no longer meets the qualifying criteria.
