The AAEM Leadership Academy is a year-long leadership development program designed to prepare AAEM members for meaningful leadership roles within American Academy of Emergency Medicine and the broader emergency medicine community.

Through structured education, mentorship, and service, participants gain practical experience in organizational leadership while contributing directly to AAEM’s mission.

Program Purpose

The Leadership Academy exists to strengthen AAEM by developing physicians who are prepared to lead, collaborate, and serve in organizational and governance roles.

Participants engage in intentional leadership development while working on projects that advance AAEM priorities and initiatives.

Program Structure

The Leadership Academy runs from April 2026 through April 2027 and includes both in-person and virtual components.

Program Components

  • In-person kickoff meeting and reception at the AAEM 32nd Annual Scientific Assembly
  • Three virtual leadership development sessions held throughout the year
  • Individual mentorship with an AAEM leader
  • Leadership project aligned with AAEM strategic priorities
  • Final in-person presentation at the following AAEM 33rd Annual Scientific Assembly

Please Note: Participation in the in-person sessions at both annual meetings is required.

Leadership Project Requirements

As part of the AAEM Leadership Academy, participants are required to complete a final project that aligns with the mission and core values of the AAEM including advancing the specialty, fostering democratic leadership, advocacy efforts, and promoting high-quality patient care led by emergency physicians. Projects should be thoughtfully developed to have meaningful impact and relevance to AAEM’s strategic goals.

All project proposals are subject to approval by the Leadership Academy Committee leadership prior to implementation. Approved projects will culminate in a formal report-out to the cohort at the 33rd Annual Scientific Assembly in April 2027.
