Presented By: JEDI-AAEM
Human trafficking is a silent epidemic—happening in every community and often hidden in plain sight. Many victims encounter the healthcare system while still under the control of their traffickers, yet opportunities for intervention are frequently missed.
In this interactive session, emergency medicine physician Dr. Exeni McAmis sheds light on how clinicians can recognize and respond to victims of human trafficking using a trauma-informed approach. Drawing from her own research and front-line experience in emergency medicine, Dr. Exeni McAmis walks participants through real patient cases, revealing the subtle red flags, screening strategies, and compassionate communication techniques that can make a life-saving difference.
Participants will gain tools to identify potential victims, build trust through trauma-informed care, and take appropriate next steps within legal and ethical frameworks. This presentation is designed to empower healthcare providers to shift from “What’s wrong with this patient?” to “What happened to this patient?”—and, ultimately, to transform awareness into action.
