Gala Dinner

Our social event venues are true to the MEMC tradition: They are historical and they are magnificent! In 1530, Emperor Charles V sent the Order of the Knights of St. John to protect the island from Ottoman conquest. A mere 300-400 Knights Hospitaller, under the leadership of Grand Master John Pascale de Valetto (Valletta is now the capital of Malta) held off several thousand Ottoman cavalrymen.

As mentioned, many of the knights were hospitallers. The Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem- Knights Hospitaller was founded in AD 603by Pope Gregory. The third of their hospitals, Sacra Infermeria, stands today in Old Valletta as a museum and the site of your Gala Dinner. Like us, the Knights treated any patient who presented for care with any complaint. Their inpatient wards, however, followed a class structure, with the charity patients housed in the basement and the wealthy on the floors above. The bed numbers carved into the walls of the wards are still visible today.
