President’s Message

Dear GLAAEM Member,

Thank you for being a valued member of the Great Lakes Chapter Division of AAEM! Since the chapter division’s inception in 2014, we have been able to grow into one of the largest regional chapter divisions of AAEM based on resident and Full Voting members. Member benefits include a free subscription to WestJEM and article sponsorship for manuscripts accepted by WestJEM. After discussion last year, the GLAAEM Board of Directors (BOD) felt the chapter division could be more responsive to member needs and simultaneously provide additional value to your membership. The GLAAEM BOD distributed a survey last year to determine how the chapter division can better serve you. Thanks to everyone who responded to the survey, it became evident that we need to improve communication with the chapter division membership. This is the primary reason we are re-starting the chapter division newsletter. We will try to keep you aware of important topics from around the region via the newsletter.

Communication is a two-way street and I encourage you to reach out to us if there are any issues that are important to you since our chapter division covers a large footprint. The BOD may not be privy to all of the issues in the region and we appreciate any feedback you can give us. In addition, the BOD wants to make the newsletter more engaging by highlighting the interesting patient cases resident members in our chapter division have taken care of. Since we are starting this endeavor from square one, we do not have many guidelines for case submissions except for an approximate length of 500 words. As we obtain more experience with this, we will inform you of any changes in expectations of case reports.

Also, based on the member survey results, the BOD will look into creating a regional CME event in the latter half of 2021. The regional CME event will provide didactic learning opportunities for members and be another avenue to educate our members about the Great Lakes region. We will try to provide a CME experience that meets the needs of our members and allow members to meet some of their state licensing requirements. We intend to make the CME event free of cost to our members. Given the far-reaching effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, we plan on having a virtual conference to avoid any potential conflicts with holding an in-person event. The BOD plans on organizing the conference in conjunction with a residency program grand rounds session and are reaching out to the residency programs in the region. We will keep you informed when we have more firm details.

Finally, please feel free to reach out to me for any ideas you may have of further improving the value of being a member of GLAAEM. I want the chapter division to provide excellent value to members and look forward to working with each and every one of you!

Sincerely,

Sudhir Baliga, MD FAAEM
President, GLAAEM

Become Part of our Newsletter

Dear Residency Programs & Residents,

The Great Lakes Chapter Division of AAEM (GLAAEM) is re-introducing our newsletter which will be distributed electronically 3-4 times a year. The newsletter will keep chapter division members apprised of the happenings in the region. Also, to make the newsletter more engaging, we want to highlight interesting patients that our resident members have taken care of. Please keep submissions approximately 500 words in length. The submissions will not be formally peer-reviewed by the GLAAEM Board of Directors, but will be reviewed for content. Also, we intend to have calls for more interesting cases for future newsletters. In the event we have too many interesting cases, we will publish these cases in future newsletters. Please feel free to email the GLAAEM board if you have any questions, would like further information or would like to submit your article glaaem@aaem.org.

Deadline to submit articles: May 1, 2021.

Sincerely,

Sudhir Baliga, MD FAAEM
President, GLAAEM
