Meet the Candidates
Gabriela Hernandez
Candidate for Student Representative (One-Year Term)
Nominated by: Self-Nomination
I am excited to nominate myself for the position of student representative for this region because of my deep passion for mentoring and guiding fellow medical students to reach their full potential. As a fourth-year medical student currently applying to Emergency Medicine, I bring a wealth of experience and insights that can help others succeed—whether it’s excelling on away rotations, crafting a standout ERAS application, or navigating the challenges of medical school.
I am highly organized, outgoing, and enthusiastic about Emergency Medicine. My goal as student representative is to create a strong network among the Emergency Medicine Interest Groups (EMIGs) in our region. I believe in the power of collaboration and want to provide a platform where we can share ideas, learn from each other’s experiences, and brainstorm volunteer events that ignite passion for the specialty. In this role, I will also work closely with the board of directors to address the needs and interests of local student members of the chapter division, ensuring that the voices of our peers are heard on key issues within Emergency Medicine.
Moreover, I am committed to helping students who may feel underserved by their own institutions. I will work tirelessly to connect them with mentors and opportunities, ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive in Emergency Medicine. Together, we can build a supportive and dynamic community that empowers every student to succeed.
Brackets Stone Kaplan
Candidate for Student Representative (One-Year Term)
Nominated by: Self-Nomination
I am nominating myself for the position of student representative for AAAEMNY/CT because I am passionate about amplifying the mission of AAEM/RSA. My goal is to increase the accessibility of information, mentorship, and support for fellow medical students, regardless of where they are in their journey toward a career in emergency medicine. I believe that everyone benefits from being part of a community that welcomes and attends to their needs. Such a community not only promotes excellence but also inspires future generations to be just as inclusive and supportive. AAEM has been an invaluable resource for me and many others, and I am eager to continue efforts to build a stronger future in emergency medicine, starting with us as students.

Voting is now open for the 2024-2025 USAAEM Board of Directors Election!
Meet the Candidates
ENS Maura L. Gately
Candidate for Student Representative (One-Year Term)
Nominated by: Alexander F. Barbuto, MD FAAEM
ENS Gately has been an outstanding USUHS medical student. In her time working in my emergency department, she was skillful, perpetually cordial, and a great teammate. She understands the professionalism required by a officer and physician. At the same time, she’s incredible easy to work with and alongside. She would be a wonderful member of the board of directors to enhance medical student outreach, both at USUHS and beyond.
I am interested in representing USAAEM as a student representative for the next year for several reasons, most particularly being my strong value for leadership work within academics. During my clerkship year at USU, I had the opportunity to obtain an Introduction to Health Professions Education certificate in line with my goal to continue long-term work within graduate medical education. I hope that this training will aid me in increasing educational resources and benefits for medical students through all four years of school. From early exposure to Emergency Medicine, to applying to residency within the Military Match this year, I have seen the support gaps for students pursing a career in EM. I have also had the unique opportunity to navigate an inter-service transfer from the Navy to the Army during my time at USU. I hope that this experience might allow me to work on enhancing student outreach throughout all service branches and connecting them and their respective resources and mentors. Throughout medical school, I have learned how vital a strong and supportive community is to one’s journey in medicine and I hope to try to be able to provide that to student members of this chapter as well as across military medicine through academics and camaraderie.
2LT Virginia Thomas
Candidate for Student Representative (One-Year Term)
Nominated by: James I. Gragg, DO FAAEM
2LT Thomas is a dedicated military medical student who has served previously in the US Army prior to medical school. She is dedicated to advancing Emergency Medicine both within the military and civilian population. She has experienced unique circumstances highlighting the importance of highly-trained EM physicians in both of these environments and would be an asset to USAAEM.
Having been a Medical Service Corps Officer in the Army prior to medical school, I witnessed the varying roles and responsibilities of Emergency Medicine physicians in the military. This coming month I will be conducting research at NASA and am looking forward to working with civilian government physicians whose scope of practice extends beyond the walls of an emergency department.
I understand that my job as a doctor in the Army will mean my career has demands outside the normal roles associated with being an Emergency Medicine physician. I am eager to represent my fellow government employed EM residents as an advocate for our unique needs. Whether we attend military or civilian residencies, our training pathways should prepare us for the broad demands of our careers.
