Physicians Get Union Election at NY
Hospital
More than 220 physicians at the Metropolitan Hospital in
New York City will hold an election in the next three or four weeks to
determine whether to join a union. The Doctors Council-a union of attending
physicians-announced today that a National Labor Relations Board decision
rejected the hospital's claims that some doctors were supervisors and
not allowed to participate in an election. The NLRB has "reaffirmed
the rights of doctors, specifically sub-specialists, unit chiefs and section
chiefs, to enjoy the benefits and protections afford by a labor union,"
said Barry Liebowitz, MD, and president of the Doctors Council. A hospital
spokesperson said the hospital is glad the issue has been resolved.
