MILWAUKEE – The American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) Selects Carol Cunningham, MD FAAEM, as the 2012 James Keaney Leadership Award Recipient

Carol Cunningham, MD FAAEM, received the James Keaney Leadership Award on Friday, February 10, 2012, in San Diego, CA, during AAEM’s 18th Annual Scientific Assembly. Dr. Cunningham courageously brought to AAEM’s attention concerns about a corporation practicing emergency medicine in Ohio. This matter involved the issues of fee-splitting and physician access to billing records. In response, AAEM wrote a letter to the State Medical Board in Ohio asking it to address the organization’s concerns about the ED contract management group’s activities.

Dr. Cunningham is a board certified emergency physician in Ohio, and is known for her work with Emergency Medical Services (EMS). She was appointed as the State Medical Director for the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of EMS, in July 2004 and is active in many national EMS activities. Dr. Cunningham works to ensure that EMS and emergency physicians are represented in collaborative efforts to improve EMS across the nation. The James Keaney Leadership Award was named after the founder of AAEM and recognizes individual(s) who have made an outstanding contribution to AAEM. The nominees for this award must be AAEM members and have 10 or more years experience in EM clinical practice.
