American Medical Association Policy on Physician
Review of Billings and Remittances Made on Their Behalf
Whereas, The Health Care Finance Administration recently issued an opinion
that independent contractor physicians are entitled to review what is
billed and paid on their behalf; and
Whereas, Individual physicians regardless of their work situations are
accountable for accurate billings and individually liable for billing
fraud; and
Whereas, Corporations and other entities that provide physician services
often do not allow physicians access to the books of account; and
Whereas, Physicians who are denied knowledge of what is paid on their
behalf may be unwittingly exploited; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That our American Medical Association adopt the policy that
all physicians are entitled to review what is billed and paid for medical
services on their behalf, and our AMA provide assistance to physicians
who are denied such information.
