American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) Continuing Medical Education Mission Statement

  1. The purpose of American Academy of Emergency Medicine’s CME Program is to provide educational activities that will stimulate, maintain, develop and enhance the study and practice of emergency medicine.
  2. The content areas of AAEM’s CME Program are based primarily on the 2005 Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine (Academic Emergency Medicine, October 2006), a document which details the core content of emergency medicine. This document is endorsed and used by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine as the basis for post-graduate continuous certification and training in emergency medicine. CME content is also based on the medical core competencies: professionalism, communication and interpersonal skills, practice-based learning, the business of EM, patient care and systems-based practice.
  3. The target audience for AAEM’s CME Program includes, but is not limited to, residency trained or board-certified (ABEM / AOBEM) physicians who are engaged in the practice of emergency medicine.
  4. The types of activities included as part of AAEM’s CME Program include a national Annual Scientific Assembly, Oral and Written Board Review courses, lectures and workshops, and any other activities that support and enhance the professional practice of physicians engaged in the practice of emergency medicine. The standard of these educational activities will be such as to appeal to the professional interests of a specialist in emergency medicine, and will include all educational activities that enable physicians to better carry out their professional responsibilities. Activities that support the personal and professional welfare of the individual specialist are of primary concern to AAEM.  AAEM will continue to support the concept of jointly sponsored activities with organizations whose goals are compatible with AAEM’s Mission Statement.
  5. The expected results of AAEM’s CME Program are to advance the science and practice within the specialty of emergency medicine, thereby enhancing patient care.
