Rodriguez Family Condolences - MLK-Drew
The AAEM expresses its heartfelt condolences to the Rodriguez family upon their recent tragic loss. While a full investigation is, no doubt, underway the fact that there are now much less support services available at MLK-Drew Medical Center, that physician staffing is now 30% of what it once was and loss of the teaching service in the ED have all contributed to a less intense level of care.

MLK-Drew serves over 28% of 1.5 million individuals living 100% below the national poverty level in LA County. Its Geriatric Service, Trauma Service and Neonatal Intensive Care, all highly regarded, are now gone from the hospital. This is an example of the crisis in emergency care which exists within many of our inner cities. AAEM urges a review of state and federal funding of these institutions. We have also seen an adverse effect upon the public health of New Orleans because of similar funding problems.
