Columbia/HCA Executive Sentenced
Jay Jarrell, CEO of Columbia/HCA's Southwest Florida Division, has been
sentenced to 33 months in jail and ordered to pay $1,693,417 in restitution
and fines. In July, a jury found Jarrell guilty of several charges that
stemmed from a scheme to submit false and fraudulent cost reports to Medicare,
Medicaid, and the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed
Military Services. Donna Bucella, United States attorney for the Middle
District of Florida said, "This prosecution represents a major step
in deterring future fraudulent conduct of health care providers nationwide."
