SPECIAL SCREENING OF “21 AND A WAKEUP” AT SCIENTIFIC ASSEMBLY

Monday night, February 28th, at 8pm, all attendees are invited to a special screening of “21 and a Wakeup,” about the final days of the last Army Hospital in Vietnam and the heroic doctors and nurses who held it together. It is the only American film ever allowed to shoot on location in Vietnam.

The theatre is a five minute walk at the Regal Point Orlando just north of the Peabody. Tickets are available for $20.00 per person, and DMZ Releasing will be donating all tickets sales to AAEM’s Foundation. Tickets can be purchased online during the registration process for Scientific Assembly. If you have already registered for the Scientific Assembly and would like to attend the screening of “21 and a Wakeup,” please contact Marcia Blackman or Kate Filipiak at 800-884-2236 to purchase your tickets.

AAEM SEEKING INDEX CASES OF EMPLOYMENT CONTRACTS

AAEM is seeking index cases of employment contracts where due process was prohibited or waived, and additionally, for physician employment contracts with metrics not dictated by patient care requirements or those that may negatively impact patients (i.e., unnecessary ordering of tests, admission quotas, etc.). These contracts can be expunged of the names of physicians and may be anonymous to protect physicians. We are also interested in descriptions of events where a physician was threatened with termination due to the raising of quality of care concerns. If any physician would like to submit cases, you may do so anonymously by contacting AAEM board member Dr. Kevin Beier at khbeier@hotmail.com.

THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE ANNOUNCES THE CREATION OF ITS MASTER OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE (MAAEM) DESIGNATION

The American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) announces the creation of its Master of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (MAAEM) designation. This honorary title recognizes a small number of extraordinary senior AAEM fellows who demonstrated a career of (1) service to AAEM, (2) service as an exemplary clinician and/or teacher of emergency medicine, (3) service to emergency medicine in the area of research and/or published works, (4) service as a leader in the hospital, the community or organized medicine, (5) service in the areas of health policy and advocacy, (6) volunteerism, or (7) other activities or high honors that distinguished the physician as preeminent in the field of emergency medicine.

Nominees are expected to meet most, but not necessarily all, of the above criteria. However, with rare exception, nominees must meet the first criterion, extraordinary service to AAEM. AAEM authorizes Masters to use the title MAAEM as long as their AAEM membership remains current. AAEM plans to announce the first recipients of this high honor at its annual Scientific Assembly in February 2012 in San Diego.

CO-SPONSORS NEEDED FOR H.R.5/S.218, HEALTH ACT OF 2011

In letters dated February 15, 2011, AAEM endorsed H.R.5/S.218, the Help Efficient, Accessible, Low-cost, Timely Healthcare (HEALTH) Act of 2011. If enacted, AAEM believes this legislation to reform the current tort system will improve patient care by making health care more affordable and accessible without affecting the standards of care that physicians must meet or the ability of plaintiffs who suffered harm from medical error to secure proper compensation.

Both bills need co-sponsors. Contact your representative and senators today via AAEM's Legislative Action Center-http://www.capwiz.com/aaem/home/-and ask them to cosponsor the HEALTH Act.
