Dr. Raed D.A. Arafat to receive 2012 AAEM International Emergency Medicine Leadership Award

Posted Monday, June 25th, 2012

The American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) is pleased to announce that Dr. Raed D.A. Arafat, Undersecretary of State at Romania’s Ministry of Health, has been awarded the AAEM 2012 International Emergency Medicine Leadership Award. This award recognizes an individual who has had a meaningful impact on the field of emergency medicine. AAEM president, William T. Durkin, Jr., MD MBA FAAEM, will present the award in person during Dr. Arafat’s Disaster Medicine Session presentation at the International Conference on Emergency Medicine (ICEM) in Dublin, Ireland, at 11:30a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2012.

“Rarely have we seen the contributions of a dedicated medical professional affect a country so profoundly,” stated
Dr. Durkin. Citing a February 10 New York Times article, Dr. Durkin explained that in 1990, Dr. Arafat purchased a used vehicle equipped with a defibrillator and resuscitation kit and drove it back to Romania. The emergency service he helped found now operates in every district in Romania and consists of 170 first-responder teams, four helicopters, and 12 training centers.

“Dr. Arafat’s passion for continuing and improving the emergency system is what drives him,” added Dr. Durkin. “His personal dedication and sacrifice exemplify the mission and values of the AAEM. It is we who are honored to present him with this award and an honorary membership in AAEM.”
