Improved Airway Management

The conversion of the faculty of a large urban ED from primarily internal medicine and surgery to EM faculty resulted in an improvement in ED airway management. Following the introduction of the EM faculty the first attempt success rate of tracheal intubation improved from 46% to 62% and the mean time to intubation was halved from 9.2 minutes to 4.6 minutes. This study adds to the substantial body of literature supporting indicating improvement in airway management with the addition of specialists in EM to an Emergency Department.
