Named ABEM President
Gwendolyn L. Hoffman, MD of Twin Lake, Michigan, has assumed
the presidency of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), which
establishes the examination to evaluate physicians seeking certification
in Emergency Medicine. In 1980, the first certification examination was
administered, and to date 17,300 physicians have been certified by ABEM.
Dr. Hoffman has been involved in ABEM's examination process
since 1983 and has served as an item writer, examiner, and team leader.
She has been a member of the ABEM Board of Directors since 1994 and has
served as chair of the Nominating Committee and Residency Training Information
Task Force. She has also served as an oral examination editor and chief
examiner for both the oral and written certifying examinations.
Dr. Hoffman received her medical degree from the College
of Human Medicine at Michigan State University, and is an Associate Professor
of Emergency Medicine there. She completed an Emergency Medicine residency
at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and served as its residency
director for 21 years. Currently, she is chairman of the Emergency Medicine
Department and president-elect of the Medical Staff at Spectrum Health-Blodgett
and Butterworth campuses in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
