Government and National Affairs Committee

Committee Focus

  • In collaboration with the board of directors and other committees, direct and coordinate AAEM's lobbying efforts in Washington.
  • Assist AAEM's "watch dog" activities with regard to governmental activities and public health issues that may affect AAEM members.
  • Supervise and coordinate AAEM members' direct lobbying efforts.
  • Monitor the activity of other national medical organizations as it pertains to the practice of emergency medicine.

The Government and National Affairs Committee organizes and hosts the annual Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. The most recent Advocacy Day was held July 6, 2017, in conjunction with the AAEM Resident & Student Association.

The committee monitors and advises the board of directors on current legislative issues affecting emergency medicine including:

  • Due Process
  • Joint venture issues in EM
  • Tort Reform
  • Out-of-Network Fees and Balance Billing
  • Emergency care as an Essential Health Benefit
  • The Prudent Layperson Standard
